CONTINGENCY OPERATING BASE BASRA, Iraq – October is Energy Awareness Month. What are you doing to conserve? There are a number of things you can do. For example, make sure you are paying attention to things you may take for granted on a regular basis.
Contingency Operating Base Basra policy dictates the use of combat showers to conserve water, but what about energy? Since most of the electricity on the COB is generator-powered, what can you do? Generators use diesel fuel. Much of our usual daily activity uses electricity and the best way to conserve is to turn off what you aren’t using. Are you turning off non-essential items?
President Jimmy Carter established Proclamation 4681 declaring October Energy Awareness Month, Sept. 10, 1979. Carter declared the need for energy conservation largely due to the oil shortage experienced in the U.S. in the early 1970s. The language in the proclamation specifically identifies the U.S. as the largest consumer in the world.
Carter recognized the need to conserve and research alternate energy sources, but what does this have to do with observance in Basra, Iraq? Since Basra is a combined base; our energy needs are met by Al Harith, a local company. We as Americans observe the need for conservation, and some of us actually try to conserve as much as we can. But, what are some things we can do here?
Most of the lighting we use in Basra is already florescent. Do you turn yours off when you aren’t in your CHU? Do you unplug or turn off your computers and transformers when you are at work? Do you turn down the temperature in your CHU when you aren’t there?
These are just a few small things we can do to assist in reducing the amount of fuel COB Basra uses each month. We aren’t at home, but we can still help to conserve the resources we use.
