The 172nd infantry brigade offered the training and instruction from the public affairs office to help the Iraqi security forces build a trained public affairs section, which would help them tell their story to the public.
The training, which included a basic introduction to public affairs, media relations and communication planning, gave the students a foundation of instruction to use in everyday operations.
“This training helps us realize the importance of building a good relationship with the media,” said Hassan Abd Al Hadi Hussain, an Iraqi police warrant officer. “If we do not have a good relationship with the media then we will not have our stories properly told.”
Iraqi students discussed experiences they have had with media interviews while interacting during the classes on media interviews and spokesperson preparation. The Iraqi police and army conduct press conferences and interviews with reporters seeking information about their development and capability.
“Preparing our commander with the right information and ensuring that the area and equipment are properly working helps us to ensure a good media event,” said Maj. Alaa Abaas Ja’Afar, Karbala IP public affairs officer. “It is important for us to have a good communication relationship with our commander.”
Visual imagery training on digital cameras and camcorders concluded the three days of instruction. The visual imagery training provided instruction on how to take newsworthy photographs and footage. Tips on lighting, angles and camera settings greatly improved the practice shots taken during the class.
“The public affairs training, along with the camera training, gave a well-rounded view of public affairs,” said Maj. Abd Al Hussain Kareem Gathbaan, civil affairs and communication officer for the 33rd Iraqi Army brigade. “My Soldiers really appreciate the training and opportunity to get help with photography.”
