The roadwork began shortly after the groundbreaking ceremony here, April 2.
“We’re putting a barrier to divide the four lanes of the original highway,” said Sgt. 1st Class Kevin D Wingard, 54th Engineer Bn., construction management section noncommissioned officer in charge. “So far we have moved 3,000 barriers and placed guard towers at both control entry points of the road.”
Other improvements include work done on the median to fill the drainage ditch with limestone and gravel to create a possible additional lane to drive on or for parking.
“When the road opens, it will be a huge impact on the Iraqi people because it is the biggest highway in Iraq that goes north and south,” said Wingard, a native of Clarion, Pa. “Iraqi businesses and local stores will benefit from the re-opening of the road.”
Coalition forces shut down the highway for local use a few years ago to ensure the security of the area.
“All of the road work is on schedule and Highway 1 will be open to the public on June 2 following an official ceremony that includes Iraqi and Coalition forces,” said Wingard.
